Station Street Mall is a small pedestrian street located in the centre of Frankston, Victoria. It connects the recently upgraded train and bus station with the business and shopping heart of the city, being the ‘welcome mat’ that is unrolled 75 metres down the length of the street. The welcome mat is constructed from a mosaic of parquetry timber decking incorporating a variety of urban elements, including public seating, outdoor dining, planting and lighting.
Timber was used to allow for the removal of hard paving. This strategy promotes groundwater recharge and stormwater cleaning within the constraints of a narrow urban street to help reduce stormwater loads within the adjacent Kananook Creek.
The construction of the central timber deck allows for the removal of over 50 per cent of the existing hard paving within the street, creating a continuous drainage swale beneath the decking linking the circular green beds. This, in conjunction with extensive banksia tree plantings, help mitigate the effects of urban heat buildup in an urban centre with limited existing tree canopy.
