Winner of the 2011 Timber Deign Awards – Excellence in Timber Design – Southern Region
Situated on the east coast of Tasmania, overlooking Great Oyster Bay, this iconic 20-suite resort features stunning context-sensitive use of timber. The sensitivity to place is evident throughout the design. Finely finished timber interiors and rough-sawn batten screens and boardings reflect the textures and palettes of the surrounding vegetation.
The exquisite curves of the wide span timber ceilings evoke a connection to the sea through references to waves, sea creatures, sand dunes and a flowing organic form. Viewed from a distance, the organic curves of the resort roofs rise gradually above the bush like small hills, reminiscent of the gentle peaks of the nearby Hazard Ranges. These curves could not have been achieved without the design flexibility of prefabricated structural timber.
