His & Her House

Winner of the Interior Fitout - Residential category in the 2019 Australian Timber Design Awards

The strong use of timber underpinned the major design decisions and was a natural selection to bring the project together visually and to inspire a familiar sense of memory. The spaces are richly layered with warm honeyed timbers, with visible knots and cracks celebrating the natural inflection and beauty of the material.

Timber floors living zones are connected via ramps internally and externally to provide universal access. The timber veneer clad transitional space between living and sleeping is optimised for storage and display. Joinery lines the length of the way, with a refined palette of timer and tiles providing a layered backdrop for artwork, furniture, plants and books.

The use of biophilic design principles ensures that every space has a garden aspect, providing a sense of ritual and delight to transcend the daily experiences of bathing, resting and living into something more experiential. The visual connection to the gardens and natural tones of timber ensures a tranquil feeling of indoor/outdoor living throughout the home’s interiors, and elevates each spaces.
