Each year in Victoria 600,000 tonnes of wooden pallets are disposed of to landfill. This is enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground 1½ times.
Most wood pallets can be reused and repaired multiple times, aside from a small proportion designed for single use. Reusing the pallets saves trees, energy and diverts useable materials from landfill. Pallets that can't be reused can be recycled into a range of wood-based products.
In addition, for every 10,000 tonnes of waste recycled, there are 9.2 jobs created as opposed to 2.8 jobs for the same amount of material sent to landfill.
