Certification is one of the best ways to prevent illegal logging, to encourage responsible forest management and to give consumers the information they need to make informed choices.

The Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) has been criticised for not providing strong enough environmental controls, however the Standard is now under review and open for public comment.

Earlier this year Planet Ark joined the Standard Review Committee with the express aim of strengthening the Standard's environmental outcomes in a number of key areas. These include:

  • Improved mechanisms for biodiversity identification and protection,
  • Improving opportunities for stakeholder engagement,
  • Improved controls and restrictions on conversion of native forests to plantations and
  • Elimination of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

If you want to see the Standard strengthened in these or any other areas, now is your opportunity. The Standard Review is open for public comment until 1 October 2012.

Planet Ark is working on a document to assist feedback in a number of key areas. We are intending to make it available to interested stakeholders upon request. Please contact us if you are interested in talking further to us about this.
